REFLECTIONS FROM THE JULY 2024 MARRAKESH ECONOMIC PARLIAMENTARY FORUM

On July 11-12, 2024, I attended the Second Edition of the Marrakesh Economic Parliamentary Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean Region and Gulf, held in Marrakesh, Morocco. The event brought together leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss key economic and environmental issues affecting our regions.

Focusing on Key Challenges

The forum addressed challenges like climate change, the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. These complex issues were discussed, with participants sharing ideas on how to confront them together.

Highlights from Day 1

Day 1 started with an opening ceremony, followed by sessions on the economic outlook for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions. Experts from the World Bank and the Ministry of Economy and Finance shared insights on current economic trends.

A key topic was the transition to sustainable energy. We discussed the need to adopt renewable energy technologies, improve energy storage, and collaborate on research and innovation. Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 was a common goal, requiring both cooperation and investment.

Key Points from Day 2

On Day 2, discussions focused on digital transformation and how technologies like artificial intelligence are changing the business landscape. Experts stressed the importance of digital skills and infrastructure to support these changes.

The forum also covered regional economic integration. Reducing bureaucratic barriers and creating an environment that supports startups and innovation were seen as essential for economic growth. Collaboration between governments, international bodies, and the private sector was emphasized.

Supporting Small Businesses and Sustainable Growth

The role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) was highlighted throughout the forum. These businesses are crucial for job creation and economic development. We discussed simplifying regulations, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing digital connectivity to help MSMEs thrive.

Moving Forward

The Marrakesh Economic Parliamentary Forum provided a valuable platform to share ideas and develop solutions for key economic and environmental challenges. It pointed out the key role of renewable energy, MSME support, and regional cooperation in driving sustainable growth.

Moving forward, we must continue working together and building partnerships to address these challenges. The insights gained at this forum will guide our efforts at ABSL Albania and throughout the region as we strive for a more sustainable and prosperous future for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.
