GENDER EQUALITY FORUM: EMPOWERING WOMEN IN THE WESTERN BALKANS

On September 18-19, 2024, I attended the Gender Equality Forum in Berlin, where leaders and advocates came together under the theme “Feminist Development Policy – An Approach for Accelerating the EU Integration of the Western Balkans.” The forum offered an incredible space for deep and meaningful conversations about how gender equality can shape the future of our region, particularly as we look toward EU integration.

Key Insights from the Forum

The discussions during the forum touched on critical issues that we continue to face in the Western Balkans. One of the main topics was gender-based violence (GBV). While strides have been made, there is still so much more to be done to ensure that women can live and work free from violence. The forum made it clear that addressing GBV is fundamental to empowering women and ensuring their full participation in society.

Another key theme was the role of women in decision-making. As the Western Balkans moves closer to EU accession, the inclusion of women in leadership roles is essential. Without diverse voices shaping policy, we cannot hope to create truly inclusive and effective solutions. The discussions reminded me of the urgent need for women to be part of every level of decision-making, from politics to business.

Social security for women, especially those in vulnerable situations or working in the informal economy, was also a major focus. The gaps in social protection systems hold back women’s economic independence and security. Closing these gaps will be crucial for long-term development in our region.

Celebrating Women’s Stories and Impact

One of the most impactful parts of the forum was the exhibition featuring the portraits and stories of 12 women from the Western Balkans, including my own. It was a humbling experience to stand alongside such remarkable women, each of whom has made significant contributions in their fields. Our stories, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through GIZ, showcased not only individual achievements but also the collective progress we are making as a region.

Seeing these stories displayed reinforced for me the importance of visibility for women’s successes. It’s not just about celebrating individual journeys; it’s about inspiring future generations of women to pursue leadership roles and break down barriers.

Looking Ahead

The discussions and ideas shared at the forum were not just about addressing gender inequality; they were about building a stronger, more inclusive future for the Western Balkans. Gender equality isn’t a side issue, it’s central to the economic and social development of our region. Moving forward, I am committed to applying these insights and continuing to advocate for the empowerment of women across all sectors. Together, we can build a future where gender equality is not just a goal, but a reality.
